This story is so rich and full of amazing creature, a complete mythology, and vibrant world it is a delight to read.
2020 Reread
I finally finished it! It's really interesting to come back to books I loved as a child. I don't think I've read this book since I was 8 years old and yet it was still cemented in my mind as an all time favorite. However, coming back to it this year I really struggled to get through it and I noticed so much more than I ever thought I realized. The book is long and convoluted with a lack of clear direction. Not to mention, it manages to be both very childish as well as extremely violent and brutal. I think reading it today it would not have stuck out as a highlight. But I do love the language Moers uses to describe things as well as the inventive world building. He creates a really rich cast of characters and locations. It was really interesting to gain a new perspective on an old book but I think I'm gonna choose to keep loving this book for its nostalgia and fun.

Full disclosure - this is two books in one and I only finished the first one. Super imaginative and fun, but the second half began to drag on and jump between characters in a way I'm sure would tie together later, but the experience of the characters was not enough to motivate me to finish.
