This book has been on my to-read list ever since I made an account on Goodreads (circa 2013), which is crazy, I only bought it recently because I wanted to read a period drama arranged marriage novel. It is more highland/England romance, and the arranged marriage really is them falling in love with each other super quickly. It's because of the time period, but I found it hard to really like the main male love interest, mostly because of his dated views (I know it was Scotland in like the 1600s), the purely physical attraction between mmc and fmc, and the plot was just not very interesting to me, hm. I breezed through this book super fast, maybe I would have liked it before, but reading it in 2022 feels really outdated.

I LOVED IT.

After the first few chapters, I truly believed I'd be rating this just as I had Julie Garwood's The Secret. I was feeling the same disappointment and dissatisfaction when I read that book. However, I was proven wrong when I started flying through The Bride, excited to get to the bottom of the mystery, as well as looking forward to the banter between Jamie and Alec.

I was prepared to rate this 4 stars, because as I've noticed Julie Garwood has a habit of not lingering in a problem/conflict for too long. This can be a problem because it seems abrupt and forced, though not enough to make me hate the book. However, that last chapter caught me by surprise. I didn't expect that kind of loyalty and I'd be lying if I say it didn't please me to see Jamie get the recognition and respect she deserves.

This book is not perfect (no book truly is), but what I felt reading this book was what brought me to rate it the way I did. Also, I am fully aware of its flaws and why other people might not agree with my sentiments but I love this book nonetheless.

2.5-3 stars. The beginning was pretty tedious with the switches between mad and flirty and upset that our heroine took. She flirting one second and pissed the next? It got old, quick. Also, being completely oblivious to one's amazing beauty was a little tedious after a while too. And our leading man is like "oh she's so pretty, but really quite insignificant..." which also was a bit annoying. BUT I will say that I enjoyed the ending and that the second half of the book was much better for me than the first half. Good enough for the few days it took to read.
