I’m shocked at the number of high ratings for this book. Yes, it had a lot of twists but none of them MADE ANY SENSE.
First, before I get into how nonsensical the twists were, we have a moment where Peter orders a hamburger and fries. Eventually the food comes to the table (but it isn’t mentioned again what the food item is) and he PICKS UP A FORK. What?? A burger and fries is a meal you eat by hand where I come from. It was just a dumb continuity thing that took me out of the story.
Then we have this one twist where it’s revealed that Peterhad slept with Seth and not Glennon I was not shocked by this but utterly confused instead. I flipped back to a chapter where Peter and Glennon were chatting at her house to see if I misinterpreted their conversation. She very clearly tells him that she hasn’t told Seth yet and is waiting for Peter to tell Ainsley first which indicates to me that Seth does not know about the cheating . Basically, EVERYTHING in that chapter where Peter and Glennon are talking at her house indicates that the affair must be between Peter and Glennon, since it is explicitly stated that Seth doesn’t know anything yet . Ok, so how is it possible that Seth doesn’t know about Peter cheating if Peter had cheated WITH SETH ?? So stupid.
Anyway, there were so many twists that made no sense based on how the characters are portrayed. The book is written in alternating first person, so each chapter switches between Peter and Ainsley. You CANNOT have twists in a book that contradict how someone is portraying themselves in a first person narrative style. Peter is a mousy guy who has trouble making decisions and is easily flustered and consumed with worries. How then is he actuallya serial cheater, a serial rapist, and a serial murderer ?
On Peter’sdate with Mallory he goes on and on about how nervous he is and how he’s worried that sex nowadays is different, that he doesn’t know how to flirt or have sex with other women . Cool, so how is it that he is a serial rapist/cheater/killer, but doesn’t know how to attract women to him? And he doesn’t think he has sex skills anymore?
It was like this book was written by ten different people who didn’t get to read what the other chapters were like. God, this book just made no goddamned sense.
In sum: just because a book has a lot of twists, it doesn’t mean they’re done well. I need my twists to make sense and to follow the character development. This was not it.
I gave it 2 stars instead of just 1 because I WAS intrigued and wanted to know how this all ended, but it was more like the fascination of watching the aftermath of a trainwreck, where you can’t believe how bad it is but you can’t turn away from it either.
