Tracy Kidder does such a great job at making the factual and informative personal. The care he takes with his subjects is so clear and makes his books very impactful.

Rough Sleepers tells the story of Dr. Jim O’Connell’s professional career with the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program. Dr. Jim and the healthcare workers in the program have dedicated decades to ensuring everyone in Boston has access to healthcare, even when no other parties in the city, state, or country were trying to make the situation for unhoused people better. The stories in this book humanize homelessness and (hopefully) inspire critical thinking and compassion.

This book takes the topic of homelessness under a microscope by focusing on individual stories about homeless people this doctor met. I had a hard time getting myself engaged with any of the stories or getting myself to like the characters. I think a more broad big picture story about homelessness in Boston would have been more interesting to me.

This book reveals so many aspects of the people who struggle with homelessness in our country. As someone who works with this population, I found the observations and insights very validating of what I have seen and experienced. I appreciated the commentary on social and political policy. It did get a bit tedious with overly detailed descriptions of some rough sleepers’ medical conditions and actions. Overall, an excellent book that leaves me with much to ponder and consider. Thank you.
