I struggled with the first 70 or so pages feeling slow or like not much was happening, but when the first of many plot twists occurred I couldn't put it down. Give it a chance.

There were plenty of elements that I enjoyed about this book: suspense, general plot and tropes, the feeling of “more than this” that was provoked by wanting to know what happened next. A few things like character development (Tomasz’ english was a big one) could have been better for me. Overall a good read.

Patrick Ness never misses! I went into this not knowing anything, and I’m so glad I did. After figuring out this is not just a hard-hitting contemporary novel, my reading experience just got better and better. This was gut-wrenching and beautiful. I loved our main characters, the apocalyptic setting, and the ending. Everything about this was great! Wish I had known the content warnings beforehand because this book was graphic, although it was all handled well. I will say, it made me slightly uncomfortable the way one of our characters was written, however, it is not my voice you should be listening to when it comes to that rep. I highly implore you to go look at reviews from Black readers.

for a long time, anytime I was asked, I'd say this was my favourite book, but I haven't read it since I was 12 and so thought it would be a good idea to revisit. it's still one of my favourite books of all time. that's it. that's the review.

Jesus fucking Christ. I thought this book wouldn't be as good as I remember it being back when I read it in 2015, but I was very mistaken. It still bangs. The characters are so alive and so well-written, the plot twists are well executed, and the narration is a complete page turner. I need to read more Patrick Ness I mean, urgently.

Wow. What an ending. This is actually the first Patrick Ness book I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm glad I went into this not knowing a lot. Definitely an oldie but a goodie.
