A freakish and chilling read. Despite the length, I finished it pretty quickly (but that could also be because I'm quarantined at home with nothing else to do, lol). Normally, books don't spook me out as much as films, but Linqvist is an expert in evoking revulsion and terror entirely within your own mind. He manages to create something new and genuinely creepy within a tired genre. The novel floats between different perspectives, some more interesting than others, but I appreciate how we get a little bit of each person's interiority throughout. Would not recommend for those easily disturbed, but everyone else I would encourage to dive right in.

Next on my quarantine checklist is checking out the movie adaptation!

creepy as all hell - and not just in a vampiric way but in a sweden is so scummy and almost everyone is shitty kind of way. lindqvist is more than happy to get down to all kinds of nasty details, be it abuse, bullying, bodily functions (or malfunctions). based on the movie I wasn't expecting such a sprawling cast and multiple POVs but it really pays off in the second half of the book. oskar and eli's relationship is wonderfully complex and could be dissected for a long long time. shattering depiction of adolescent isolation and depression.

the film adaptation of this book is outstanding, had to give a reread of such an epic and dark story.

This is one of my favorite books. I would usually read it in between calls at my old job which was dangerous since it didn't give me the motivation to take any calls. I've probably read this book 10 times from 2010 to now. It was a much needed read during the Twilight craze. It had subtle references to the vampire genre while telling different point of views.

Okay, so I want to rate this book 4 stars but what stopped me was my pet peeve-unnecessary details involving characters who weren't important to the story. Other than that, the book is amazing for several reasons:
the vampire is a little girl (almost)-who wouldn't want to read about that, right?
the vampire kills and there's no covering that up-no sexy smooth talking vegetarians here.
you connect with both the kids intensely-when Oskar gets bullied, I wanted to go save him.
the violence and the sadness and the loneliness just gets to you..chokes you up and keeps you reading.
be warned, you WILL need Teddy Bears, if you want to get through this book with the least bit of depression
the ending..well it takes the cake!
I haven't seen the movie yet (any version)and will add to my review once I do.
