It’s such a shame because for 90% of this book I was thoroughly enjoying it, laughing and really rooting for the couple. I prefer slow burn stories to instalove and this was great in delivering that. I managed to complete it in 2 days as it was a quick read which was cheesy at times but still cute.
The last forty or so pages had me very confused. The (spoiler) kidnapping drama felt like it came completely out of nowhere and it resolved by a tiktok threat?? Honestly i found that pretty cringe and I don’t see what the point of adding drama was if it was so seemingly low stakes and easily resolved. It had me skim reading most of that scene because I didn’t really understand what it was doing there at all.
Overall, I still really enjoyed this book. It’s a shame the ending made me drop down my rating from what I otherwise would’ve considered a 4 star read, but I would still say this is well worth a read if you want a silly romcom.
There’s one proper spicy scene, a few kisses - the author knows how to write tension.
Overall I feel like what this book really needed was for it to be a bit longer because there were some things left without resolution and the events of the ending might’ve worked better if they hadn’t taken place in such a short amount of time. I would love to know more about fredericks backstory, and possibly also Reginald’s.
Overall good fun book with an out of place ending that dragged it down.

this was exactly what i expected it to be in a not great way. jealousy, invasions of privacy, possessive love interest, deeply insecure yet ~different from other girls~ lead… sigh

the sex scene wasn’t that spicy, ive read hotter from virgins on ao3.

the vampire bit was kinda cool but it gave watered-down volturi vibes.

anyways, none of this was for me, but a person looking for tropey, easy cishet romance with a halloween twist might! no shame just really not my jam

This book wasn’t bad I just wanted more I think. I feel like there were times the book lagged and nothing was really happening even though I know it was to build the relationship.

I really liked Frederick. He was adorable and charming and loveable. Cassie, I went back and forth with. I found that sometimes she acted immature for her age (30s) and other times she was a bit cringey. The sex scene wasn’t bad but also not the best thing I’ve ever read.

Overa lol, the story is cute and adorable a light palette cleanser for fall, but I think it could’ve done more. Have the characters get to know each other more? Talk about something other than his hotness? Lol I just needed more.

This is such a fun, kind of camp, low stakes (pun intended) vampire romance. I actually could have done with a smidge more danger and definitely would have welcomed more spice!

Frederick is one of the sweetest heroes I’ve read, so out of place in the modern world and he’s so romantic.

Also really liked the epistolary elements - lots of letters, texts, lists and diary entries which help to tell the story.

A cute, fun vampire rom-com to slide into spooky season with.

Characters: 0.5; FMC noticeably more developed than MMC, fun side characters
Plot: 0.5
; silly rom-com plot that suffered from an oblivious FMC and low stakes at the end
Pacing: 0.5
; decent but with a rushed ending
Writing Style: 0.5
; fun, approachable style
Vibes: 1.0
; the note-writing and text/email conversations were hilarious and my favorite parts, I still have the urge to sign my texts off with "yours in good health"

Spice: 2.5; vanilla with a vampiric twist. When the spice does happen, the vampire MMC takes on a much more dominant, intense personality than he was previously characterized as having, similarly the FMC becomes much more submissive. Both seemed out of character, but the spice was still good.

What We Do In The Shadows meets Kate & Leopold (minus the time travel)  in this fluffy, feel good paranormal Rom-com about a down on her luck artist and the eccentric, marshmallowy vampire she moves in with after being evicted by her landlord.

I absolutely LOVED this! It has just the right amount of humour and the adorably eccentric Frederick, our cinnamon roll love interest (and vampire roommate) stole my heart with his humorously old timey mannerisms and general awkwardness surrounding modern society/ social conventions.

Cassie, our protagonist was really likeable too and though she’s painfully oblivious at first (both to Frederick’s not so subtle feelings and vampire status), I really enjoyed watching her slow realisation and inner thought processes as Cassie begins to come to terms with her new circumstances (and vampire filled) reality.

She did give me slight Jess from New Girl vibes (which I’m not mad about) and if this is ever optioned for TV or a movie, I can totally see Zooey Deschanel playing her.

Reginald, Frederick’s friend (and fellow vampire) was also a firm fave of mine, and I’d love to see more of him (and his roguish charm) in future— I’ve also got my fingers crossed for a spinoff, as his brief mention in the epilogue has me all kinds of intrigued.

Overall, a fun, fast paced read that you should definitely check out if you’re a fan of Sarah Hawley, lighthearted vampire stories or cosy, low stakes style Rom-coms.
