3.9/5 - I finally finished this after a year of stopping and starting it…lol. This book was a rollercoaster, and while i do usually enjoy Dostoevsky’s ramblings i felt it was excessive in the book. Besides the rambling it felt like he couldn’t get to the point with the characters. However the characters didn’t feel surface level even though a lot of their lives happened off the page. Prince Myshkin is now probably my favorite or second favorite Dostoevsky character (besides Alyosha). He is the embodiment of kindness and empathy that is so lacking in the world-then and even now! While i did skim over a lot of parts I found that this will definitely be a memorable read for me!
sad ending though :(

Is Myshkin a positively good man, or is he simply an idiot? that seems to be the question of this book. I think he's a bit of both, but I fail to see him as this "christ-like" character that everyone else seems to see.
Myshkin is a naive, self absorbed man, who doesn't consider the consequences of his actions and has little to no real introspection, despite his tendency for soliloquizing.
The story itself is slow, (with lots of dialogue that I did actually find enjoyable), and filled with characters that seem to have no point except as worse people to bounce this "good" character off of. People are attracted to Myshkin because it is easy to use him for their own means, and hate Myshkin, for the same reason.
As in real life, there is no true conclusion, which I wouldn't mind (and would, in fact, like), if the rest of the book had had more substance.
