DID NOT FINISH

DNF although I only had 100 pages left

I don't care about any of the characters, not even Miskyn the "purest" of them all, and it is so character driven it's unbearable. I may proceed with another of his books in the- not so near - future...

The main character is representative of Dostoevsky’s highest ideals and values: kindness, faith, love, and innocence. He is thrown into a society of greed and selfishness, seeing how or if that will affect him. Dostoevsky continues his analysis of true goodness and righteousness through this character and novel. He takes seemingly simple struggles, of a simple man, and makes them visible. His books are so informative and insightful into humanity and reality. The book challenges beliefs and values, and engrained that reflective moment prior to death throughout this novel. Each character is larger than life, exhibiting the most extreme emotions and thoughts that are humanly possible.

This is a good book. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

“But, nevertheless, I will add that in any ingenious or new human thought, or simply in any serious human thought born in someone’s head, there always remains something which it is quite impossible to convey to other people, though you may fill whole volumes with writing and spend thirty-five years trying to express your thought; there always remains something that absolutely refuses to leave your skull and will stay with you forever; you will die with it; not having conveyed to anyone what is perhaps most important in your idea.”

Maybe not the book for me. All of life’s truths, tossed around in fits of fragmentation, but none that interested me. Maybe we just don’t live the way they did anymore.
