Lonesome Dove was incredible. The cast of characters and locations are so well realized. I loved the writing and was absolutely shocked by some of the character's actions (or lack thereof). There was just enough humor to offset the bleak and depressing aspects of the journey.

Oh I really cared about these characters, so much so that I was in a perpetual state of anxiety that something bad would happen to them.
What a great book. Get me on the wild frontier, it sounds awful but also amazing.
This book will probably make you cry. Quite a few times.
Just so beautiful
Don't let the size intimidate you - it keeps you caring what happens at all times and pushes you through - this is the fastest i've read a book this big

It's been a good long while since I read a book that "Just one more chapter'd" me into the wee hours of the morning. Not only did Lonesome Dove do that, but it did it multiple times this past month.
This book boasts multiple strengths:
1) The characters have seemingly endless layers (some more so than others), you think there's nothing new you can learn about them, then lo and behold they say or do something that makes you look at them from a whole new angle.
2) It also has a well-paced plot. There were indeed multiple "Just one more chapter" nights, but McMurtry also knew when to slow down and give us time to process the heavy moments
3) I would also be doing the book a huge disservice if I didn't mention McMurtry's prose (or is it style? English class was a long time ago). He spends a good 6 pages describing and giving the history of the "Hat Creek Cattle Company" sign and I was totally there for it. I can only think of a handful of authors who could also have pulled that off.
I've only read this book once, but I can already say with certainty that it's one of my Bookshelf Essentials.

I read this book when I was overseas. An old woman sent it to me in a care package, and her note was kind and I had a lot of time so I dove in. I’m not aware of a book that tugs to firmly on so many emotions, or which makes you feel as much. An all time great, and it transcends genre. Read it. Buy it for your friends. Give it as a gift.

I don’t think I could ever write a review for this book that would truly reflect my feelings or thoughts.
It’s a rare thing to find a world so alive and characters so real.
I have carried this story with me over the last week or so and m devastated to have reached its end. I went to bed last night dreaming of this book and I doubt it will be the last time I do.
I want to recommend it to everyone and at the same time I’m possessive of this story. There are no words I can say to do justice to this book.

One of my new favorite books of all time. A slow start but well worth it for the odyssey you go on with these incredible characters.
