I read 50% of the book and just could not get into it. Painfully bored the first 200 pages and just didn’t care about or connect with any of the characters by halfway so called it quits.

Wow. What a journey. This is one to take your time on. You really feel like you’re along the journey with them, slowly moving up on this cattle drive. The characters are all so fascinating, the dialogue is perfect. This beautiful juxtaposition between the stoic, outer personas of these men and their more complex inner thoughts is beautiful. Dark and depressing and hard to read at times, but so worth the payoff. Worth every page.

Absolutely staggering. I adored reading this. Very bleak, but so deep and so meaningful. But most importantly, ENJOYABLE. It’s rare for me to be able to pick up a book for literally 2 minutes and instantly be absorbed, this did that every time. All the characters felt so fleshed out and real. Just brilliant. Nearly 1000 pages and took me over a month…and yet, I still didn’t want it to end.

Wow
I've been into historical fiction a lot lately, I think because of the uncertainty of our current world; it's nice to know how something already ends, maybe.
This book is amazing. It's was on a few Top Historical Fiction lists so I grabbed it from the local used bookstore. Does it treat the Indigenous as 2-D characters? Yes. They are either murderous monsters or starving. And I know that's problematic, but I do remember my grandparents talking about growing up in the prairies (1930's Canada) and being automatically afraid of any Indigenous they saw. We know even today the awfulness of depicting and treating anyone different than you as villain/ wrong/ needing to be saved. For me, even though that particular aspect of this 1985 Pulitzer Prize winner doesn't age well, I think it definitely depicts the polarized attitudes of 19th century America honestly.
