Excellent book, well written and personal. One of those books that is deeply connecting, and heartwarming, but never cheesy. Easy to read but still complex topics. Probably my favorite book of the year so far

A deep--and deeply personal--exploration of the process and experience of therapy. I had to put it down every now and again for a while because it was just a bit too real. She did an excellent job at crafting multiple narratives, though I did occasionally find the shifting around constantly a bit difficult to track (especially between her past and her present).

I did disagree with some of her approach, mainly her theory that everyone's problem is that they're just too busy and won't slow down. Which is true for a lot of people, but most of my clients have the opposite problem--there's a reason activity scheduling is a popular therapeutic technique. But it may simply have been the sort of clients she sees. There were also a few things presented as facts that were not true, such as therapists being required to go to therapy as part of their training--maybe in her program or state, but this is not nearly a universal requirement.

But overall it was a funny and heartfelt take on my field that I enjoyed a lot. I'm not much of a memoir person in general, but I did like this one.

Listened this on audible - perfect blend of humour, wisdom and storytelling! I really enjoyed immersing myself through eyes of the individual stories.

Amazing! The writing is brilliant and kept me coming back for more. I felt like *I* was getting therapy; at times it made me reflect on things in my life I don’t like to think about. Other times it felt like a hug, with just the right amount of advice buried under an anecdote. I laughed. I cried. I cheered for her and patients as they grew throughout their sessions. Highly recommend!!

Frankly - I wasn’t sure about this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the progression - it was well structured and flowed nicely. I recommend it for people who are between books or between life experiences.

Wow. I was blown away by this memoir. It reminded me of Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt. Lori, a therapist, navigates her own struggles while helping others through theirs. She shares not only the stories of her clients but also her own journey as she seeks therapy for herself.

I absolutely adored her patients. John reminded me so much of Tony Soprano, so I visualised Lori in their sessions as Jennifer Melfi. I loved Rita, who also reminded me of The Man Called Ove. And Julie’s battle with cancer and miscarriages truly inspired me.

There’s no hierarchy of pain. Suffering shouldn’t be ranked, because pain is not a contest. You can’t get through your pain by diminishing it,. You get through your pain by accepting it and figuring out what to do with it.”

I laughed, I cried, and I reflected. This memoir is filled with so much humanity—raw, honest, and profoundly insightful. One to remember.

Incredibly moving. Basically six months of free therapy.
