Life in a small American town before WWI, told in a modern and knowing style with a narrator who knows the future of characters. We skip through the years with adolescents becoming adults, with marriages and deaths and regrets and all of life on a platter, summarised with just a few individuals.
It's bare bones, simple and effective, quite moving at the end, clever and very forward-thinking for its time.
I read it straight after Wilder's farce The Matchmaker and his range is extraordinary. The contrast was amazing. This was one play I'd read ABOUT but never got around to actually reading and I'm really glad I did as it's deserving of its accolades.

Surprise pockets of emotion caught me while reading—would love to see the play performed live.

Mixed feelings on this one. I know it’d be much better to watch than read (the fun of plays), but the first act just didn’t pull me in. The second act was fun, and the third was heart rending, but I just felt like I wanted to fly through it rather than savor it. Maybe a reread one day with analytical eyes will add a star or two

This is a true classic. I'm glad I've seen it performed because I believe it is more powerful than simply reading it. (But, in general, that can be said of all plays.) Although it takes place in a small New Hampshire town pre WW I, I find much of it is universal and still relevant today.
We had planned to discuss this book with a group of 8th-grade girls from an inner-city school for at-risk girls. But two weeks before the scheduled book club their teacher informed me that she preferred the girls read and discuss Steinbeck's "The Pearl." I was still glad I took time to read "Our Town."
