The big twist was telegraphed so early that the last two-thirds of the book felt like filler. I kept hoping for some additional piece I hadn't guessed, but it never came.

An Excellent Mystery develops slowly, as it's not so much about the mystery that eventually drives the plot but, instead, about love and devotion in several shapes. As usual, Peters does the love-at-first-sight trope, but there is a difference in execution here that makes it a more interesting tale.

No murder in story. I didn’t enjoy it as much as prior Cadfael books.

I've loved all of the Brother Cadfael mysteries, but this and [b:The Virgin in the Ice|847860|The Virgin in the Ice (Chronicles of Brother Cadfael #6)|Ellis Peters|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344266118s/847860.jpg|1275714] have got to be my favorites so far. The characters are lovingly and engagingly drawn, the historical setting adds richness to the story without overwhelming it, and the mystery is absorbing enough to ensure I don't want to put it down.

Rated this one a 3 rather than a 4 like pretty much all of the others because I figured it out super fast. But it's still a good read.

My unfailing inability to foresee twist endings means that my jaw *actually* dropped when this one was unraveled for me by darling Sister Magdalen at the end. A very fun little mystery! Always great to see some continuity by bringing characters from past novels like Magdalen and Rhun back into play.
