i jumped right into book 2, so hard to remember tons of deets on book 1.
- def had some beauty and the beast vibes
- at one point early on when she was in the spring court, i was curious if she would fall for lucien instead of tamlin. was also open to a 3 some, but that never came through. i still feel like lucien might have feelings for tam though
-i think by the end we learned that amarantha was the blight on everyone's magic. it was her doing that made fae from the spring courts unable to take their masks off. and she put some kind of convoluted curse on tamlin/his court about how tam needed to find a human who had killed/hated fae, and then get that human to fall in love with him? maybe he also had to fall in love with them? so i think he sent his emissaries over the wall into the mortal realm hoping some human would kill him? unclear if tam/anyone else in the world is bi/homosexual. not sure if things would have been applicable if a male human killed a fairy...
-the book sure did take its time. interesting that it's the first of 6, could have benefitted from some tighter editing. fayre spends A WHILE losing herself/healing via painting while falling for tam, then it's a good 3 months below the mountain. not sure why amarantha needed to conduct her each of her 3 trials during a full moon
-by that pt, it became clear that feyre was getting to know rhysland in a way she really hadn't with tam
-at the end, feyre dies but each of the 7 high lords use their blood to resurrect her as High Fae. this opens the door for interesting plotlines in future books
-am only half way through 2nd book, but liking it more already

Caveat, I’m not a fan of fantasy in general. I found this so bad. Unclear if it was the narrator or the writing itself? I think both. Cartoonish characters that I cared nothing about. I hated the sound effects in the narration. Ultimately I am shocked that this is so wildly popular.

Spoiler Alert: I decided to give this book a go due to its wild popularity and several friend recommendations. I knew to expect the worst, as most reviews have said to simply muscle through in order to get to book 2. After reading this book, I understand many of the negative reviews it receives. First, I’ll say it’s commendable and wildly brave of Maas to write an entire novel chronicling a villain-adjacent love interest. Looking back, I see the writing maneuvers she made to get the two main characters in love, but leave room for the reveal in book 2. That said, the risk didn’t always pay off. The first half of the book lacks a lot of tension. Laced with confusing sentence fragments, dialogue and complicated descriptions of the Fae world ad well as a plot that requires readers to fill often fill in gaps, the book almost required a fantasy dictionary for me to understand her world building and what was happening. I would not recommend this book for those new to romantasy or fantasy, generally. I think readers often chalk the missteps up to Easter eggs placed throughout the first half of the novel, and several of them probably can be. But I think there are messes in the writing that go beyond what is tidied up in the end. As a side note, who has a world of Faerie building, High/lesser Fae and then names their character FEYRE, unless that name is a significant plot point!?

An easy read that didn't feel like anything revolutionary but was very enjoyable and I can see the roots of a lot of other romantasy.
