A Little Known Hero

I read this with my teen son, and it was a story neither of us had heard before. Towards the end, there are parts that drag, and there are so many names and places introduced that you would need a flow chart to keep it all straight. Still — if you think you pretty much know the story of Auschwitz, you really don’t until you read this book.

Freedman’s superb writing style and well-researched narrative bring a rich, engaging color to Rudy’s many escapes. I appreciate that Freedman did paint Rudy or the other characters in his story as purely good or wholly evil. There is a complexity to this novel that showcases just how layered and multi-faceted human-beings are - especially when they are ruled by a governing body of other complex individuals.
