I DNF’d at 23%. There’s a very obvious romance brewing and it’s giving me the creeps. If you’re going to pair people off at the age of 10 and one is much older…just no.

4.5 - upon reread, maybe a 4? Honestly maybe lower
I think reading this the first time was a whirlwind that swept me up. I didn’t know what would happen, and I was so EXCITED about what I read at the beginning that any major faults I had with the book were staunchly repressed and never thought of again. Upon reread, I have to say, I find the book a little juvenile. Granted, yes, it’s a YA novel - but I just finished the Rebel of the Sands trilogy and THAT was an incredible overthrow of the monarchy in the YA genre if I’ve ever read one. Honestly, my biggest problem with this book was Brienna; I liked her perfectly fine the first time I read the novel, but now that I’ve read the book twice, I honestly keep finding myself asking WHAT is Brienna’s personality? She doesn’t have one! At all! It’s so annoying! And her romance with Cartier was mysterious but not nearly well-thought out enough. I’m disappointed, but here’s to hoping the next book is better.

This really just hit every YA book vibe that I’m constantly looking for. 10/10 absolutely ate it up
