I don’t read a lot of crime, but Murder in the Family is a new social media hype, which is how I first heard about it. It’s premised as follows: an unsolved murder case and six experts in the field put together on a TV show trying to figure out what happened - can you, as a reader, solve it before they do? That sounded like a fun challenge, so @booksofamber and I decided to tackle it together to see if we could.
What’s fun about this book is that it’s written in multi media format, through TV transcripts, text messages, forum threads, emails, newspaper articles and more. You read every bit of evidence as it is presented to the experts, and so you are trying to figure out what happened right alongside them. If done well, I love books written in different formats. With this one, I wish they’d left out the newspaper articles because those dragged a lot for me, but the rest was great.
If you can, I would suggest reading this in physical format. I read the e-book, but I really wished I was able to flip back and forth more easily, because there are a million plot lines going on, and it was hard to keep track of everything. But then there is also just a lot of information thrown at you. There were two particular plot lines that I didn’t like: one because it seemed too far-fetched and one because it brushed over something major.
But other than that, I loved watching everything come together, and I did think the end was great, even though it was the first thing we predicted had happened when we started reading. And we read it in a little over 24 hours, so that’s definitely a good sign. I'm writing this review right after, so I'm still coming down from the high. If you're a fan of crime books and murder mystery games, I would definitely recommend this one.

Bookshelf Raiders September Read - Author's name beginning with 'C'
I was eagerly anticipating reading this novel that had been generating a lot of buzz online. However, when it came to reviewing and rating the book, I found myself facing a bit of a challenge. I dithered between three and four stars for some time.
That being said, the plot was enthralling, filled with suspense and drama that kept me engaged from start to finish. The characters were all deeply flawed, which created a dynamic and tense group dynamic that added to the overall appeal of the story. The ending was a complete surprise, and I was impressed by the author's ability to craft such a well-rounded and intricate storyline, giving each character an equal amount of importance. Hunter's mastery skills are evident, making this book an ideal choice for a book club read, with plenty of discussion points to explore.
However, my main issue with this book is its format. I found the chapters in the printed version to be too lengthy, which made it a bit tedious to read at times. I believe that the audiobook version would be a better choice, with each character having their own distinctive voice, making it sound more like a documentary and adding to the overall experience.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to fans of murder mysteries and thrillers. However, I would caution readers who struggle with complexity to approach this book with caution, and perhaps read with a notepad to hand, as it does require a bit of effort to fully appreciate the details of the story.

Picked by husband. Really enjoyed it. Don’t usually like script-type writing but found this one to be easy to read and follow. Story with twist upon twists with surprised ending. When everyone is trying to protect someone, nothing is ever what it seemed.
