suuuch a well executed intro into existentialism. i wish that i had started with this book the almost decade ago when i started reading this field of philosophy bc it would’ve helped me contextualize everything better. its goal was to explain existentialist main ideas to people unfamiliar with it and it 100% accomplished that. it irks me a little bit to read negative reviews saying that this is too elementary when that was the entire point of it lol

Easy to read, easy to unpack, a lot of Sartre's concepts and arguments still hold water though today's philosophical, social climate is remarkably different. The book ages well and is a good 'starter' for understanding existentialism. I'd say Sartre's rebuttals to accusations and attacks on existentialism are somewhat pliant, though they do 'work' existentialism isn't a miserable apathetic belief system, however it certainly can be, the edicts of freedom of will and self construction allow for any number of forms in which personal development may manifest.
