Would have given a 5⭐️ bc I love Dolly so much - but I read this over the course of a few months. I picked up the audiobook first to start on a plane - and then went to read it and they’re very different so I ended up reading the whole thing and listening to the audiobook little by little. I love Dolly’s voice so hearing her tell her stories and meanings behind songs was so cool - but I will say the audiobook felt scattered at times and a little repetitive. I enjoyed seeing the pictures go to alongside the book so I’m glad I ended up reading both ways!

I really love Dolly, but the truth is I’ll forget 95% of this book. She literally calls almost all of her songs a favorite so they all started to meld together in my mind. I found the parts about her childhood the most interesting, but that was just a small part of the overall story.
lighthearted slow-paced

This almost felt more like I was listening to a documentary of an interview without watching it. It was very Q&A style, which was fine but not exactly what I was looking for. Very cool (and necessary) that Dolly narrated it, and I loved hearing snippets of the songs.

This is definitely more of a coffee table type book. Like flip to a random page, read some lyrics, put it down. If I read a physical copy I probably would have clocked this right away, but because I read Behind The Seams (as an ebook) pretty much like a normal book I thought this would be the same.

4 stars for Dolly!

If you are a big fan of Dolly there is quite a bit of repeated information here. However, I would say the majority of the book were stories that I'd never heard before. Probably 30% repeat info to 70% new stories if I had to guess.

The structure is really fun too. Dolly revisits and explains nearly 100 of her songs. Some I knew, many I did not. I actually enjoyed getting to learn new Dolly songs through this book. I listened to it and the audiobook even contains samples of every song mentioned. It was a really lovely listening experience.

Dolly narrates the majority of this book (she is occasionally prompted by her co-writer) and I can’t help but smile whenever I hear her voice. The physical book looks absolutely beautiful. I glanced it the other day in Barnes and Noble. So I can't say that the audio is definitively the better formant. But I had a great time kicking it with Dolly and listening to her songs as I went about my errands.

“I just like horny songs.” - Dolly Parton

I quoted that line to summarize this book because it’s a glimmer of just how genuine she is in her storytelling. I highly recommend the audiobook on this one, as Dolly tells her stories in a voice that bring words on a page to life. It wasn’t the kind of memoir that leaves you with something deep or profound to reflect on, but it did leave me with sense of joy.

I really enjoy Dolly Parton. I listened to the songs as I read the book. I recommend doing that. There may be a Spotify playlist but I didn't hear about it until after I'd finished.
