2nd chpt and mc commits sexual assault .. like wdym ure kissing a person and they think ure someone else??! i was waiting for him to push her loser ass back and give her a piece of his mind jus for it to be dialogue circa 2012 wattpad. apparently he kissed her “like he was seeking to possess [her]” .. BE ORIGINAL!!!!!!! very very predictable writing like “dark one” Yawnnn. ALSO the author definitely looked up lesser known countries and changed a couple of letters for it to b “masadonia”😭

I was looking for a more mature fantasy series. This leaned more young adult than had been explained to me in the book store, so some of the writing was a bit less challenging than I’d have hoped for. However, the fast pace, plot twists, and sexy interactions I wasn’t expecting seemed to pull me in, despite wanting not to like it early on. A third of the way into the novel it picked up and I couldn’t put it down. It was seductive and full of symbolism. The mystery of the plot and cliffhanger end left me anxious to read on in the series…plus it’s hot! Perfect for a summer reader. I’ll read the next one.

A must-read for fans of ACOTR. Poppy is the revered Maiden who lives a sheltered life controlled by the Ascended. As her own ascension nears, her own desires and needs wrestle with the expectations on her. When the handsome Hawke becomes her Royal Guard, Poppy struggles to keep her emotions in check. What follows is some earth-shattering truths that Poppy will need to make sense of if she is to survive.
After book one, this feels like a great series, as TikTok readers have claimed. The first half is a little slow as the world & character building is the focus, the last half of the book has a good pace and of course the passionate smut makes an appearance. I enjoyed this read and will continue with the series.
