The Maiden is selected by the Gods and from birth her life is not her own. Due to Ascend before the Gods, Poppy is resistant. She doesn’t understand what the ascension entails, nor does she want. And yet, Poppy is a not just the Maiden. She is a person; with her own desires and dreams.
And when guard Hawke comes into her life she finds him impossible to resist. It’s forbidden to touch the Maiden. Yet the Maiden herself burns for his touch.
When tragedy strikes the castle in the form of the Atlantians and the Craven (a vampiric race who are enemies of the Ascended, and a lesser race who no longer control their own minds and have sucumbed to blood lust), Poppy is summoned by the Queen to the capital. Hawke accompanies her, and on the way Poppy discovers he is not what he seems.
Can she still love him when she discovers his true identity? Or is their relationship doomed from the start?
I ordered book 2 soon after starting this book as it was so good!

There are also a lot of crumbs throughout the book which gave me an idea of what would happen next. Although some aspects of the story were predictable, I found it satisfying when I guessed correctly! There were also moments when I was caught off guard by unexpected twists and turns,
It is a slow-burning romance, making it all the more satisfying when the characters finally come together. The author has also thrown in an enemies-to-lovers plot, adding an extra layer of complexity to the romance.
Poppy, is a force to be reckoned with. She is charming, strong-willed, and knows her way around a dagger! I found myself becoming more and more invested in her story as the book progressed. I could see why Hawke falls for her, despite his rough exterior. Hawke is a gray character and complex
Reading this book was an emotional rollercoaster, and I cannot wait to read the next one!

This book was just *chef’s kiss*. Starting this book I didn’t think I would like it. It’s a bit different than what I normally read. Our main character/narrator, Poppy, is the maiden- the chosen one. Which she states numerous times through the first few chapters. *eyeroll* (the 1/4 star got cut here just since I was really annoyed with it) Once the story picked up a little more and the characters grow on you, it’s a great story. I laughed, I cried, I even shared in the anger of the characters at parts. It was so easy to fall into the character’s shoes. But then- PLOT TWIST! This book does end on a cliff hanger. It’s a great story & I'm really excited to dive into the next book.cdoubet's review
