It was okay probably 3.0 rating but I got to the last 100 pages and the book lost me that I almost didn't finish.

***edit: The more I think about this book. The more I hate it.
What is consent my dear reader? The main LI doesn't know. I hate that character more and more. Acts like he knows what's best for the MC. I also don't like the MC.

I think the characters were really well rounded and Poppy is a strong female lead. This was a quick read, I kept wanting to read more. I’m interested to see where the story goes in future books, it seems like there’s a complex history within the plot which I’m looking forward to learning more about. I just loved the relationship between Poppy and Hawke. Their flirty banter was perfect - the scenes involving the diary of Willa Colyns had me laughing so much! Good level of spice as well.

Ending had me laughing, what part of
proposing when there’s like 6 dead men staked to a wall
is romantic ahahahaha. Also there was so little consent the entire last part of the book was kinda rapey - v much not my vibe ty i like my consent explicit and repeated, and not given under the influence of magical seduction teeth sucking.
Didn’t hate this though, plot twist was clear from basically the beginning of the book, but was still fun to see it unleash. Poppy’s reactions following the reveal were bizarre though, I don’t think I would have acted the same way (although luckily I’ll never have to find out). Yeah I’d read the next one, phuckit.

This book was abysmally slow. Poppy is annoying and stupid. The love interest (I have forgotten hs name) was unlikeable. Their power dynamic was extremely toxic. It had these weird world building paragraphs that were huge info dumps in between one word dialogue. Grammatical errors everywhere and horribly repetitive dialogue. Saw the twist from a mile a way. Book picks up last 50 pages but it isn't worth it.

The two people of color in the book are both in servant type roles. One is named TAWNY. Big yikes.

I honestly don't know why this book is so hyped. It was one of the worst books I've ever read.
