I probably would have rated this higher if I read it instead of listening to the audiobook. The narrator had a pleasant voice but was so solemn and one-note for every single character, it was hard to tell who was speaking or if something was dialogue or narration.

I found it hard to connect with the characters, and it frequently felt a little overwritten, as if the author was trying to hit a certain word count. The buildup was slow and then all at once. Idk. I would recommend it but probably wouldn’t read it again.

TW: racism, delusions/hallucinations, body horror, grotesque imagery
Spoiler abuse, incest, murder, rape

This book was a work of art. A chilling tale with a lovable, flawed heroine that was easy to root for, making her way through a story that grew more and more chilling by the inch.

Noemí is a wonderfully complex character - filled with strength, poise, femininity, intelligence, and good humor - and the tale in which she finds herself is deliciously reminiscent of the classic The Yellow Wallpaper . She contends with frightening ideologies, harmful traditions, and life-or-death scenarios with the fierce determination of a true survivor, making all the choices the audience might desire from a horror heroine, in spite of her absolutely terrifying circumstances.

The writing was exquisite, and in particular, the ways the author portrayed unease and psychosis were pure poetry. Not only was the story incredibly deep, haunting, frightening, and intriguing, but the way it was written was an utter treat.

This book had several disturbing elements to it, but it was truly a delight to read, and quite creepy in more ways than one! I’d definitely recommend. As I’d mentioned: it’s an absolute work of art.

My least favorite of her books that I’ve read so far but still a good one.

4/5 ⭐️ Creepy, eerie, and atmospheric! What a unique yet utterly disturbing plot with a cast of (mostly) unlikeable characters. I loved it! However, I wish the tension would’ve slowly built up and kept me hooked, but instead it felt a little flat in the middle 1/3 of the book.
