This is less a book than a booklet, but it seems like a good, snappy resource for any potential dog-adopters out there

Another good dog training book by Patricia McConnell.  This one delves into the positive aspects of adopting an adult book and how to retrain some of the issues that your new adult dog may come with.

This is a short read (<1 hour) that I picked up 3 weeks after adopting a 10-month old dog with some issues. The book urges patience and reinforces that things will work out well with you & the new pooch. This is the biggest benefit of the book.

Much of the book is devoted to the first few days, which was too late for me (I got some things right, some wrong). There are some useful tips on behavioral issues like living with other dogs, guarding, urination inside, separation anxiety, and desensitization to household fears. Other behavior concerns (e.g. reactivity to dogs) are mentioned but mainly to advise avoidance and hiring a private trainer to tackle.

Update after 6 weeks with my rescue - I can’t say that any of the behaviorial advice has proven to “fix” all of my dog’s issues yet, but the book was definitely right about the phases of settling in for new dogs to feel safe and become themselves. Some of my dog’s issues were transient. Quick and easy read.

I think I would have liked it more had it addressed issues I've had with a rescue 8 years after I got her but I know that is not the intention of this book.

I read this book while preparing to adopt an eleven year old dog. Although the adoption did not happen in the end, this book was very interesting to read. It is the only resource on adopting adult dogs that I have found so far, and it is very well written. It covers everything from arriving at your home, to housetraining, to dealing with problems the dog might have. After reading this book along with some other works by Patricia McConnell and Cesar Millan, to name a few, I felt prepared to adopt an adult dog.

Great resource for people adopting dogs older than puppy age. The last several pages list out great further reading/websites for specific training issues and concerns. I plan to recommend this book to people who adopt my fosters because it's a great, simple starting point.
