I was about to decide he was losing his moral compass. Those kind eyes were getting a little deceitful. But, there is redemption.

I’m always happy to find myself back in Three Pines. This series has become a comfort read for me. That said, these are not cozy mysteries. Some books get very dark, the language and content can be very harsh and uncomfortable. I don’t love all the books equally, but I am so glad Louise Penny keeps writing. Gamache is one of my favorite written characters and I know I’m not alone in that. The character and plot developments are just so good. They really do need to be read in order, and unfortunately I don’t really love the first few so I am very cautious to recommend them. This book was a really good one.
Here are a few quotes I loved,

“Non. He said, ‘Be very, very careful who you let into your life. And learn to make peace with whatever happens. You can’t erase the past. It’s trapped in there with you. But you can make peace with it. If you don’t,’ he said, ‘you’ll be at perpetual war.”

As a good rule of thumb, if you have to lie, you might be doing something wrong.

Have you read this far into the series?

Finished in Oxford. WTF is up with the repetition of the “junkies, trannies, and whores”? Lots of transgender references in this book that made me cringe. Times they are a changin and whatnot.
