This book is honestly good but it tends to drag. The characters are super compelling but I had a hard time following as all the plot twists started to feel too convenient. Definitely read if you like a grittier fantasy with few positive plot points.

Brent Weeks's first book in the Night Angel series was a wonderfully engaging fantasy novel. He obviously comes from the George R. R. Martin school of writing and is thusly unafraid to maim or even kill his main characters. His characters are full and grow beautifully throughout the story, and more than one will surprise you. This is a great, quick read for someone looking for a good fantasy diversion.
Reread: This pass through the book left me with a few misgivings about character voice, some awkward relationship dialogue, and a rather convenient return of a villan that didn't really seem believable. Still, with all that, it's a good book. Read and enjoy.

Solid. Underwhelming on my second read, honestly. It's hard to review this book because I remember how much I loved it and I also know how much more there is to come. All of the awesome things I remember happening in the series didn't happen in the first book. Does that mean the first book is bad? No. It's just not memorable compared to the excellence that comes later.

This book that I happened upon is so much better than the ones I tried to identify...grabbed me from the beginning. It's really well-written. I'd been about to despair about that from the recommendations for sci-fi genre I'd been following lately--UPDATE
I wrote above after reading first few pages--after that it goes downhill fast and writing becomes sloppier and sloppier. No longer recommend

I didn't actually finish this book. I merely reached a little past the halfway point and simply quit reading it. I didn't actually mean to, but once I started another book - that was so much better than this one - I realized I'd probably never get it finished.
I disliked the story structure, how nine years passed in a very jerky manner, and almost universally disliked the characters. The few - one, I think - characters that I was actually interested in seemed to have an extremely small parts. The one I was actually very curious about, only showed up twice in the first half.
I really disliked the treatment of women in this book, how they were all either virgins or whores - and if they were over eighteen, they were certainly the latter. There were also a could of very misogynistic comments and that eventually got to be too much for me. I also really didn't like the amount of language in the story. I think you can get your point across very well without resorting to curses in such a gratuitous way. (Except for the king - he couldn't get a point across even with his curses.)
What other people have mentioned about this book feeling like a twelve year old boy trying to be an 'adult' by using curses and talking up sex really hits the nail on the head.
