A very gritty and dark book. A lot of focus on the world and politics, was lost for most of the book but still enjoyable :)

I still don't understand the two paragraphs about architecture that Azoth spouts while eating his bread.
Otherwise a very thrilling book. But that architecture paragraph... why has no one caught that before publishing?

A great read. To be honest, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it... George. R. R. Martin's influence is clear, at least in the way that you can't be sure who's going to die and who's going to survive against all odds. That said, Brent Weeks definitely has a style of his own. Some battles or other tasks that Kylar completes get a little tedious with the constant narration of action, because it wasn't always necessary to the plot and personally I get a little tired of having to imagine such complex physical movement in my mind's eye, but most of the time it's pretty riveting and written well. Durzo Blint and Kylar are very intriguing characters in their own ways--in fact, all the characters were well-crafted, and led me to care about characters or want to know more about their pasts.
If you want a fantasy book that's unpredictable and fast-paced, read this book. I know I'll be picking up the next one as soon as I can.

I don't think this book was absolutely wonderfully fantastic. It was good. I love to read books about assassins and for some reason this one just didn't really stand out. Plus, it personally just bugged me that the author called "wetboy"s well, wetboys (Assassin just sounds cooler, sorry- weird of me I know) and "deaders"? really? It kind of sounds like a word an elementary schooler made up.
Anyways! About the book. I have a feeling that the next two books are going to be better so I have higher hopes for them. This one dragged a bit sometimes. The characters are kind of flat and predictable. The fight scenes are cool though, and everything turns out well in the end.

To be fair, was this bad? No.

It was a good story. Certainly full of action scenes, violence, and all the necessary apprentice assassin tests, tricks, and trials. The final climax in particular seems like it starts at the seventy percent mark and then just... keeps crescendoing. You think, okay, surely we've done it now. Surely it's over. But it's not over. There's still ten more fights to barely survive and shocking discoveries to make.

Three stars for the story.

Minus one star for the child rape. And the other kinds of rape. And the... other stuff. *gestures vaguely* I guess I'm just a pansy and a weakling because I can't take it and it really sucks the enjoyment out of an otherwise very gripping story. I only have so much brainpower and will to live, and it's just not economical for me to damage myself in such a way.

Fantastic dark and twisty assassin novel that made me laugh aloud a few times.

DNF - got about 60% of the way through.

I’ll update later with my thoughts
