Brent Weeks is one of my favorite new authors, and I wish he'd write more! He handles controversial subjects in a unique and tasteful way. The characters and their stories are engaging as hell. Best assassin story I've ever read!
This was decent for a first book. The writing is a little clunky, with lots of repeated words and phrases instead of pronouns. The plot twists were sometimes belabored, and not always believable. A lot of the content seemed to be violence for violence's sake (and the same for cursing and sex). The plot overall is pretty good, enough for me to pick up the next one and see what it's about.
I think Weeks fancies himself a great writer. This book was entirely too long. There is very little character development. Though I don't believe that's for the author's lack of effort. This book is just one fast paced plot point bumping into the next. Despite the terrible things that happen(ed) to all of the characters it does little to push their actual development.
I may be a bit harsh on this issue. Perhaps this is because I just finished [b:The Name of the Wind|186074|The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle Day One)|Patrick Rothfuss|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1172529959s/186074.jpg|2502879] prior to starting this book. [a:Patrick Rothfuss|108424|Patrick Rothfuss|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1226875325p2/108424.jpg], while writing a 600+ page book, was able develop the characters into interesting colorful images without sacrificing a bit of action.
There are a ton of typos and some very awkward sentence structure. On top of that the names are absolutely ridiculous. Maybe not the two main characters, Kylar and Durzo. But many of the towns and other names are just silly, not to mention difficult to say. Needless to say, goofy hard to pronounce names are a huge pet peeve of mine.
After all of these complaints, I suppose I should explain why this book still managed to get three stars from me. I guess it is because I'm probably going to read the next book, if not the third. I want to know what happens, and I am hoping that there is some redemption for Kylar and a better writing presence from Weeks.

EPIC.
Brent Weeks made me laugh while restoring my faith in the fantasy genre.
With the likes of *shudder* Twilight and all the other crappy vampire trashy novels clogging book stores and libraries I was thrilled to find something as amazing and complex and thoughtful as the Night Angel Trilogy.
Don't even think about it, just read this book!
Admittedly, the start is a little slow but once you're a chapter in you'll be hooked!

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, and to be honest the only reason I had any interest at first was because my maiden name is 'Weeks'. I was completely surprised. I couldn't put this book down (and now I'm on the second book). I love the characters. I despise the characters. I love the characters, again. There were twists I didn't see coming and some that I guessed before they were revealed. I could feel the emotions from the characters. I am so glad I picked up the trilogy.

A friend of mine gifted me this book, so I really wanted to like it. I picked it up, read as much as I could bear, put it down... then repeated the process a few times over the course of a month or so. But this just isn't my kind of book.
I like an antihero, but I can't stand truly unlikable, rotten characters. I don't mind violence and crime, but I dislike a world that has no hope. I enjoy an ensemble cast of characters, but I abhor weak character development. And to add to its sins, this book demonstrates a terrible attitude towards women and their sexuality.
Is it set in an intriguing world? Sure. Is there plenty of action? Yes, though it's not always coherently described. This book has a bunch of high reviews, so clearly it's a question of what you value in a book. If the things I've listed above make you unhappy, you might try a different book.
Before I abandoned this one, I read through dozens of reviews on the rest of the trilogy. If book one is problematic for you, they'll be worse.

It took a little while to understand the world of this book. I had to restart a number of times, but the perserverance paid off in the end. Looking forward to more set in this world.
Picked this up randomly due to a recommendation from a chapters employee and I was definitely not disappointed!!! Took me a little to get into it but once you get about 1/3 of the way through it’s pretty much non stop action.
