I like the story! The dialogue between characters threw me a bit, and I can't exactly pinpoint why, but the story was interesting.

It's not incredible, but there are some interesting things here that I don't think I've seen in a fantasy novel (except for in a friend's unpublished novel), and I don't hate their presence here. I think it could have been more of a focus/more engagingly done, but this is the author's first novel, and I can tell from the end of book author interview that he intended that to have a greater thematic impact than it ended up happen, and I can forgive that. And the book as a whole does read like a first novel in a lot of ways, which can pull you out a bit, but it's fine. Overall the book isn't incredible, but it's somehow intensely readable and I had a good deal of fun with it.

So, it’s a bit predictable and the story goes pretty much the way you expect it to, but it’s an enjoyable story in the same way a blockbuster super hero movie is enjoyable - the not perfect hero suffers but preserves and just maybe will manage to pull together a win in the end.

Listen this would've been lower 1 star but the last 10 chapters were so epic I had to bump it up. This book took me so long cause I didn't care, there was a lot of sexism and child rape..
I didn't pay attention to chapters 35-55 bcz there was just so much bloat, only the beginning and end of each chapter was relevant

This story was a bit slow going in the beginning, but once the 'education' began, the story moved along pretty quickly. There were a couple of good revelations and quite a bit of action in the last 1/4 of the book that it really kept the pace going and kept me reading until 2am.
