I definitely enjoyed the book (plot, characters & writing style), and I will definitely read the other books in the trilogy. One of the things I liked best about the book was the fact that I was surprised at how the story unfolded.

one of the principle characters is called Durzo Blint. I think that explains my rating well enough
2/5⭐️
It would be 3/5 if not for the not-so-subtle misogyny and Durzo being an emo on steroids—

I read this in high school and I decided to reread it. It is 2.5 rounded to three. It had some good characters with decent character development but it went on for too long in places there was no need for it. For instance, the training of Azoth/Kylar as an assassin was nonexistent but Weeks went on at length about architecture and where the different color rock came from... why???
This one is a thrilling page-turner, though awkward at times. Kylar Stern is a street urchin who escaped his lousy street urchin life by becoming an apprentice wetboy (which is basically an assassin plus magic powers) to the best darn wetboy in the world, Durzo Blint. In the background, the country of Cenaria is undergoing political upheaval and threatened by the powerful kingdom to its north.
While reading this book, I kept feeling that I didn't know exactly what's going on. I flipped back in the book at times, and realized that some of the confusing aspects could be explained by remembering a point that somebody mentions once a few hundred pages earlier. That was a bit awkward. Still, I think that there is a lot that is just missing. I don't think that the magic systems nor the political structure of the country was ever really explained in any detail. I did like the main character, Kylar, though the guy that is apparently the number two protagonist (Logan Gyre) never really has any moment to develop his character until the end. Kylar and Logan are supposed to be best friends, but we never really see them doing things that friends do.
Still, I liked the idea of the story a lot, quite a few of the characters, and it is a page turner. I think I rate this between a 3 and a 4, but probably a little closer to a 3 with the problems I had with the structure of the book.
