reading heart of darkness and studying Yeats in high school made it so much more enriching as a reading experience, because from the The Second Coming poem in the beginning I could already foreshadow the end nearing.

however, I read this for university and it felt quite dense. maybe it was just my current mindset but I can recognise its impact and importance in literature.

After reading Slouching Towards Bethlehem, I had to read the other book whose title comes from Yeats’ “The Second Coming.” Never read this in high school, and I’m glad I didn’t, because I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it then as much as I do now, post-English major. Rich anti-imperialist themes and a tragic ending - 4.5 stars!
