I confess, I am new to the word of contemporary rom-coms.  However, my expectation is simple: A and B wind up in some wacko situation together, are attracted to each other, have some very steamy sex and then declare their love, probably in a completely unrealistic way.   That’s it.  I’m not looking for deep meaning or great character development or fantastic writing.  Just something light and funny and some good steamy bits.

This book fit that bill very well.

I don’t know about you but reading for me during 2020 has been all over the place. I have always been a mood reader and my reading selections very much reflect what is going on in my life, currently.

This time of the year is definitely our most hectic work season in general and throw in parenting/working during a pandemic and life feels like a lot right now. I have found that I either need something super heavy and thought-provoking or total escape reading, there really is no in-between!

This book came highly recommended to me by some of my trusted reading sources and I couldn’t wait to dive in. I can go either way with the rom-com genre and tend to struggle when there is just too much fluff. I need some sense of reality, relatable struggles, or something!

While this one was a little out there, it really worked for me and it was a totally unique perspective on the tried and true “roommates fall in love saga”. I loved the there was a fiercely feminist narrative when we are taken into the world of adult entertainment (a very much marginalized occupation) which was unexpected and super enjoyable.

There are some steamy scenes, strong characters, lots of laugh-out-loud moments, and a focus on female pleasure within its quirky plotline. I consider myself a pretty opened minded reader but I could see this storyline being off-putting for some, so keep that in mind if you like your romance more on the “predictable” side.

The Roommate was a great debut novel by Rosie Danan and I am already looking forward to her next release, The Intimacy Experiment, coming in April 2021!

3.5 stars from me!
In all honesty, yes this book was good but it also just felt a little hard to really get behind at times. I found myself looking for more depth to the characters and although I could like the characters it was quite difficult to actually connect with them on any other level.

The concept? Love it. The main direction? Love it
The execution? It was good, but it just wasn’t a 10/10 for me and that’s why I’ve given this book a comfortable 3.5 stars overall

The theme is similar with The Kiss Quotient, but I prefer that book than this one.
