I purchased a copy of this book at a library book sale.
"Shopaholic & Baby" follows Becky Brandon. Becky's life seems perfect, picturesque even. She has a great job at London's newest store, she is house hunting with her perfect husband, Luke, and she is expecting her first baby. Becky is determined to make everything in her life perfect for the arrival of baby. Unfortunately, when Becky finally gets to meet the celebrity must-have obstetrician of her dreams, she learns her new doctor is Luke's ex. Is her perfect world that she has worked so hard to maintain crumbling?
I picked this up because I had heard of the Shopaholic series, but I have never read any of the books before. I was very happy to discover that although this is part of a series, and the books do build upon each other, I did not feel lost while reading this book. The author does a good job of discreetly summarizing what happened in previous books, if you have not read the ones before.
Becky is such a fun, over-the-top character. She is a great person who often gets misjudged because people think she is vain and materialistic. The truth is that she has a great heart and creative ideas, but she also appreciates the finer things in life. I loved watching her character grow into her role as a mother all while staying the same, shopping-obsessed character she truly is.
This story felt tense. Becky is pregnant and believes her husband is cheating on her, and especially in her hormonal state, she feels like the world is ending. This coupled with her discovery that her blood pressure is high, makes every decision feel rife with worry. This still reads very much like a fun contemporary that you can devour in an afternoon, but the tension makes the story propel quickly.
Is this the next groundbreaking piece of literature? No, but this is a really fun story with really great characters.
I am definitely curious to pick up more books from this series.
