Volume Four was probably my least favorite book so far, but this series has been stellar.

A thrilling continuation to this series. Alana and Marko have hit a rough patch in their relationship and it’s taking a toll on everyone. Even Marko’s mom, a very tough woman who has seen her share of life’s struggles, is feeling the effects. We’re introduced to the a new Freelancer, an agent who can be contracted for work, who has now joined the hunt for the couple and find out what has happened since Robot 4’s head injury. Gwendolyn and Sophie have banded together to form a team of their own, on the hunt to find some special ingredients for a very special mission. The band of characters continue to provide humor, intrigue and action at every turn.

Finally got around to Volume four! So let's jump in - full summary ahead. At the end of volume 3, Alana, Marko, baby Hazel, Klara, and Izabel all flee Quietus after Heist is killed. Prince Robert IV had some sort episode (possibly amnesia?) after being attacked. The Will was grievously injured and left in a hospital.

In continuing the habit of fleshing out more of the universe, we learn about the Robot Kingdom, which is on a dwarf planet that revolves around Landfall and its moon Wreath. Early on the robots decided they would side with Landfall as their main ally. This explains why Prince Robert IV was out in the front lines. His absence since he left with the mission to capture Alana and Marko has been noted. His wife has just given birth to a son, the new heir. Unfortunately, a janitor named Dengo, whose son died of a preventable disease after drinking contaminated water, murders the princess and kidnaps the baby.

Alana, Marko and co. have landed on Cardenia, where Alana is making money by working with a semi-illegal entertainment troupe called Open Circuit. She gets the job through Heist's ex-wife Yuma. Yuma also happens to peddle drugs and Alana begins to spend most of her time high and at work, putting a strain on her and Marko's relationship. Marko meanwhile, lonely, is trying to both stay low and let his daughter have a normal life, taking her to the park and enrolling her in dance lessons. He grows close to his daughter's teacher, Ginny.

Klara, Izabel and Friendo provide much-needed humor; and the last bit of the volume shows that Gwendolyn and Sophie haven't given up on The Will, and are joined on their quest to save him by The Will's sibling.

There's a lot happening in this volume, as usual. There's the idea of people drugging themselves to escape the horrors of reality, either through actual drugs, escapism, sex, etc. There's the isolation Alana and Marko feel as they emotionally disconnect, followed by the unintentional physical separation at the end of the book. Just as the first two volumes discussed inequality among both Landfall and Weath, here we have an entire new arc come to fruition from the inequality in the Robot Kingdom, where commoners have a drastically worse life than the nobles.

As per usual, finishing another volume leaves me really anxious to grab the next one and find out what happens next

This was such a solid and fantastic installment in the series!! The pacing was spot-on and none of the stories felt neglected; the characters continue to grow and develop, all while facing challenge after challenge; the artwork is imposingly gorgeous; and somehow, there is still enough humor mixed in that I don't just gasp while reading this, but also laugh.

The overall balance of characters/arcs was so well done, and I really think that is one of the strong points of Vol 4. Additionally, I don't normal like "voice overs" (like when Hazel gives her ongoing commentary) but it truly felt natural in this volume.

Full 5/5- can't wait to read more!! Part of me wishes each volume was 500+ pages, but I'm so greedy for graphic novels like this that I know I'd just read them all WAY too quickly!

Weird volume.
Weird stuff, unexpected stuff.
And some 'What the Fuck' stuff.
All in all, good stuff.
