This was an amazing take on unicorns and their magic. I was drawn in and wanted to read the other books as soon as possible!

Rating: All-Time Favorite, Reread

This is a reread of one of my all-time favorite series. I haven't read it since my early teens, so it was really interesting to read as an adult. This is the story of warrior unicorns, sort of the coming of age of the Chosen One amongst them.

There is some strangely formal and old-fashioned dialogue amongst the characters, which was somewhat jarring, and there is a sequence at the end that I thought was way too over-the-top. But for the most part, it stood up! Jan is the son of the prince of the unicorns, Korr, and I love that the author creates him as a character with an open mind. Jan is open to understanding other races and people (gryphons, pans, Renegades), where the rest of his people, especially his father, are not.

This was a super fast, fun and cozy reread that brought me a lot of joy. I will be continuing my reread of the series!

Though I'm a little late when it comes to reading this trilogy, so far I'm thoroughly enjoying my second foray into Meredith Pierce's writing. Because either last year or the year before I stumbled upon another book of hers in my library, though admittedly I thought it was a Tamora Pierce work until I actually looked at the author on the cover beyond the last name. My bad. But that little mishap led me to discovering another great author I don't mind renting shelf space to.

Finally found it!

Having read this when I was 11 it was a story that always stayed with me even though I had long forgotten the title. I finally found it and am pleasantly surprised to find it was the first installment in a trilogy. It was as magical as I remembered and I am excited to read the next books in the series after all these years!

Jan is a stubborn, adventurous and completely reckless. He also happens to son to the Prince of the Unicorns; a proud race who sends their older foals on a pilgrimage every year as an introduction to adulthood, to the life as warriors. But the pilgrimage ends in the lands where the unicorns once roamed before a band of wyverns drove them away. It's a dangerous place and it's important to stick together and act as a team.

But Jan is impatient and thirsty for adventures; he has a hard time keeping in line. There's so much to see, so much to do. And as they get closer to their goal, he's starting to realise that there's more to the truth than he's been told...

I was recommended this series by my boyfriend as it's one of his favourites from his early teens, so of course I had to give it a go. I mean, unicorns? It's hard to resist.

I wish I would have read it when I was in my early teens as well. It would have fit me much better back then and I would've been able to appreciate it more back then. But it was a good read; exciting and a wonderful world to sink into. It was hard not to fall in love with the reckless little brat Jan or his friends Dagg and Tek. They're a good, exciting trio and I can't wait to find out what they're gonna be up to next.

This is the first real fantasy book I ever read as a kid. I was probably 9 or 10 at the time. I loved the whole series and I still have fond memories of reading it.

I'm abandoning this one - the cheese is just too great. There is definitely a place for cheese in my heart but I'm just not in the mood right now (#RobinHobbBookHangover2017). I wish I had known about this book when I was 10!

I KNOW I've read this book before. In fact I'm sure I've read the entire series. The title and plot synopsis was so familiar to me, but I didn't remember the storyline in any sort of detail. I must have read it when I was young.
Having said that, this book reads very maturely for YA - I find that it's written in a more classic style. So, I'm delighted to have rediscovered it. The trouble now, will be in obtaining the other 2 books in the series.
