A solid enjoyable read that doesn't break new ground, but delivers exactly what it promises. A good seasonal choice for Halloween and lovers of gothic Victorian ghost stories.
This is the story of Beatrix a medium, and James a scientists who exposes supernatural frauds like herself who together set out to expose the secrets of Ashbury Manor, where his mother and younger brother found their tragic death. As expected the preternatural does manifest itself at the manor with steadily more gruesome consequences for everyone involved.
I was drawn to the story because I love Rachel Hawkins' writing and have enjoyed her Hex Hall books and this did not disappoint. My only complaint was that the romance felt a little too rushed and insta lovey, but that is also a pet peeve of mine.
I would like to thank SerialBox Publishing and Netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I can not get enough ghost stories, add a haunted house? I’m sold! I was so excited to read this one. But.. it fell short for me. The romance was a great addition to the story, but I feel like it was written in later as an after thought. There were moments where it was describing the house, or something spooky, then it was suddenly talking about how James couldn’t take his eyes off of Bea and vice versa. The haunting itself was a little confusing. It started off great! I was hooked on page one, but about halfway through it got sketchy. This story has a lot of potential, and I’ll definitely look for more horror books by this author to see if the next one has improvements.

Beatrix Greene is a spiritual medium who offers her services to clients who crave for some contact or closure with their departed loved ones. Unlike her competitors, Beatrix is famous for relaying empathy in her work without all the show and pomp that mediums displayed during Victorian England. However she is also a fraud just like the others and does not believe in ghosts.
At a time when finances are tight, Beatrix gets a lucrative offer from Dr. Walker, a scientist known to tarnish reputations of spiritual mediums. Nevertheless, Dr. Walker challenges Beatrix to perform a seance and conclude whether Ashbury Manor is truly haunted or not following the history of a mother who killed one of her two sons before slashing her own throat. Beatrix takes up the offer and faces the consequences of the most evil journey one can imagine.
Let me start off by saying this book has gratuitous gore so definitely not for the fainthearted! But if you can get past that, this book is unique in many ways! First, the book is written by 3 women authors with each author penning one chapter. Yet the writing is not choppy at all. Secondly, the chapters are called episodes and the whole book is called Season 1. Perhaps a sequel is in order? Thirdly, this is a feminist horror novel where the women rule! You go, ladies! And lastly, my favorite...the ending is not your usual ending of mundane mutilations (although there is plenty of that) but lot of positive messages. I won’t get too specific but messages like good/confidence can outdo any type of evil. So even though I read the most gory novel this year, the positive messages in the end left me in good spirits (pun intended). 5 stars!

This was the perfect book to start as the weather changed. I really enjoyed this mix of historical horror with a little bit of romance thrown in there. Psychics and mediums really interest me so this book was a no brainer, I knew it would suck me in early and it did.
Beatrix is a medium and she is called upon by James to come to his family home to see if she can help him to understand the evil that lives inside this house. Beatrix doesn't honestly believe in her abilities, she feels like she gives people comfort by telling them she can communicate with their loved ones. Upon entering this house, she is hit by waves of darkness and knows there is something lurking there. It was definitely dark, that is for sure, but Beatrix called on powers she didn't know she possessed and helped James find peace.
I really enjoyed how they worked together and the side characters were just as interesting as the main characters. It was a great spooky read.

A fantastic 5 star on the edge of your seat ghost story. I love a good ghost story. Loved the character of Beatrix and how she grew into powers she didn't know she possessed. Looking forward to the next volume.
Beatrix Greene is a young women who makes a living as a medium in Victorian England. She isn't a real medium, but she has great intuition and is a good judge of people.
She encounters James Walker, a man who spends his time discrediting mediums.
He and asks her to come to this mansion and prove whether or not it is haunted. He offers an absurd amount of money and she would be crazy to pass it up. She figures she will get a few ''feelings' while she is there and claiming the spirits are gone and walk away with a lot of money.
When they get to the house there are other guests including a Mr sir Arthur Conan Doyle. All is not quite what it seems with the house and James was not quite forthcoming with all of the information.
This book had multiple authors but the story flowed really well. The love story was a bit cliche but that didn't take away to much from the story. I dislike when stories have relationships for the sake of having a relationship. There were parts that, like most ghost stories, you want to ask them why they are doing that, which was frustrating.
Overall I really enjoyed it, if you like haunted houses and Victorian paranormal stories you will like this.

Haunted house horror? Sign me up! Add a dash of gothic romance, loving friendship, dark history and I'm happy. I really enjoyed this book in that it doesn't try to be too clever. It's an old-fashioned ghost story featuring a fraudulent medium and a man searching for spirits in an old manor. Beatrix is a great character. I liked that she is independent but not too prideful to ask for help. There's no miscommunication that is usually evident in these kind of stories - everyone basically comes clean when it matters. I was surprised by how gory the book gets at times but it adds to the horror.
I'm not usually a fan of romance in my horror and here it moves pretty fast between Beatrix and James. But I thought the book makes it clear that it's mostly a physical relationship so I found it believable. Even if there might be something more later. I really liked Beatrix's friendship with Harry too. I did find the storyline predictable and the solution too neat. The spiritual aspect about energy and power also could have been explored further. But it didn't bother me too much. This book is written by three authors and yet it feels seamless. Give this a try if you love ghost stories!

This book consisted of a Haunted House, a Medium, someone who is a skeptic and a bunch of other characters adding to the story.
Beatrix our Medium in the book is of course a fraud and James who is the skeptic in the story is trying to prove it.
Ashbury Manor is supposed to be haunted, Beatrix and James go to investigate and the story takes of from there.
While I love a good scary story this one wasn’t as scary as I had hoped. Yes it did have ghosts and possessions and a gothic feel but not as much as I wanted. It was a fast read and I enjoyed the characters but was left with wanting more. I felt it was rushed a little and maybe could have had less of the “stuff” in the middle to have a better ending.
Overall a good read for October.

Beatrix Greene is a medium, providing services to those who seek proof of the afterlife. She is also, like most mediums, a fraud. James Walker is in search of someone who can speak to the dead. Throughout his search he covers as a man debunking the mediums he comes in contact with. So colored Beatrix surprised when he offers her a job, as he believes she really can commune with the dead. Here's the deal... spend one night at Ashbury Manor to prove, or disprove, whether it's haunted. Agreeing was her first mistake, but will staying once they reach the Manor be her last?
Holy cow what a scary, heart-pounding and perfectly wonderful gory ghost story! This is so well written I could feel the fear and picture the bones and evil. I'm really glad I read this in the mornings
