how long until they turn it into a movie? (i hope so?????)
i kinda devoured this book (unemployment thank you), first half had me screaming and crying and throwing up; the "don't worry about me" "i don't" AAAAA isabel you sassy tall lesbean. by second half i felt i was getting disappointed i didn't expected the romance to be that intense i thought the story would be more like psycologhical thriller but you got me at the plot twist!!! i usually prefer tragic endings but you know what i will take the happy ending. i will let myself believe today that love is possible. the writing was definitely to my liking, refined and superior, it got me hooked from first chapter.

A fascinating book covering a part of history I knew nothing about. Great characters which brought the story to life. Well worth reading

I loved this book. Isabel's transformation over the course of the book is slow then fast, like a snowball down a hill and is symbolized by her attachment to the house: her own vice-grip on the past, her self-expectations, her familial obligations, and the expectations of a post-WWII society.

I, myself, expected this to be primarily a story of women's subjugation in a patriarchal, conformist society. It is that, but much, much more: the book deals with the shame and guilt of those complicit in the imprisonment and deaths of their Jewish neighbors during the Holocaust. The author uses the relationships between characters and the spaces they inhabit physically and socially to explore that shame and guilt, uncovering buried identities and intentionally forgotten histories.

I cannot wait to read more from Yael van der Wouden.

This book has such a fantastic premise and plot twist, and is really beautifully written - some of those metaphors took my breath away.

However I couldn't connect with the book properly becuase the romance felt rushed and forced, and the characters lacked dimension. It needed a lot more build up and I need to see them actually interacting beyond fucking and exchanging a few spiteful words.
