I can't remember the last time I enjoyed such a straightforward small-town romance. Usually, this type of story would bore me but CCW has such a way of writing complex characters and deep emotions that I can't get enough of her work. Plot-wise not a great deal happens, but every scene and event adds to what we know about the characters or goes towards their growth throughout the book.

Shay was such a momma bear, I couldn't help but cheer for her and admire her resilience in the face of great odds. Whilst Kellum had and occasionally continued to make mistakes, he DID try his best to learn from them and be a better man. Blood is thicker than water, though, so I could appreciate how difficult he found it to recognise the truth about some of his family.

Despite being a child of few words Mia utterly stole the show. I would have loved more scenes of her with Dina, I can hear the conversations they would have and the disdain they would show for anyone foolish enough to waste their time.

I disliked Cash for most of the book, but he kind of redeemed himself right at the end, so I will certainly read his story. I also need to know John and Dina's stories too so it looks like I'll also be reading the Steel Bones series!

It was fun, I didn't expect this turn of events but I do love seeing the chemistry between the MMC and the child. It's something adorable and the story was progressing at a slower pace

I've read a few books by this author and this is by the one I've liked the least.

Shay had a shit life but i really didn't like her much, exfept for when she was being a mother to Mia, which was lovely. Shay was just super untrusting and refused to actually talk shit out and that annoyed me no end. I just wanted to slap her multiple times for acting like she did. Somethings are totally understandable other were a bit too much for me to stomach in term of her reasoning.

Kellum also wasn't amazing i get that he's a good guy and doing the right thing and that he finally 'took off the rose tinted glasses' but honestly if people had pushed the same issues earlier it would have happened earlier..  maybe not before Shay but still earlier than it did happen. I get that we don't always see our fanily as others do, but they all blame him for that, when he did bothing wrong really.

I like how the Wall family rallied for Kellum and Shay but honestly I didn't like this world or the characters, so i probably won't be reading more of these. But i do want to try the Steel Bones series maybe that will be a better fit.
