I read this one in one go but I'm not sure how I feel about it now that I have. Curiosity certainly kept me going, but I found the story and the characters in it disturbing. Also it relies heavily on the trope of physical traits reflecting people's inner worth and qualities, which I don't like and find dangerous, in general. The explanations "—the word X here means Y—", though somewhat funny at first, were overused in my opinion, and lost their charm after the first few uses.

I'm curious enough to check out the next books, but I'm not as impressed as I'd hoped I'd be.

The child marriage plot threw me up a bit. Also, Count Olaf was basically a pedophile?

This was a great book! Am I 18 and reading it because I watched the tv series on Netflix and felt like I missed out on a part of my childhood? Yes. Did reading this book fix all the childhood trauma I’ve had? No.

It was still a great read and I would recommend it. I read it in 1 day which is actually very uncommon for me. Even as a slow reader this is a quick read and keeps your focus and keeps you entertained.

To those of you who like to listen to music or sounds while you read, I suggest listening to the band Cosmo Sheldrake. Their music really encompassed what was happening in the book and it was like the books very own personal soundtrack. Except the song “Come Along” that belongs to a different book.
