This book proved itself both heartwarming and heartbreaking but thoroughly engrossing nonetheless this books explores the intersections of parenthood, coming of age, class, culture, and race in a profound and challenging manner.

This was my second book of Celeste Ng’s and I found it lighter, faster and more enjoyable than the other - Everything I Never Told You. It was a good read on the disparity between having the ideals of a better and speaking the right words but not working that through in practice. I was left wanting the world to be right for most of the characters, but of course, it never ends that way is it’s not a utopia. Worth reading if you’re up for something quick and light between other things.

“All her life, she had learned that passion, like fire, was a dangerous thing. It so easily went out of control. It scaled walls and jumped over trenches. Sparks leapt like fleas and spread as rapidly; a breeze could carry embers for miles. Better to control that spark and pass it carefully from one generation to the next, like an Olympic torch. Or, perhaps, to tend it carefully like an eternal flame: a reminder of light and goodness that would never—could never—set anything ablaze. Carefully controlled. Domesticated. Happy in captivity. The key, she thought, was to avoid conflagration.”

Oooh this one ended up fascinating me. Took me a minute to connect with the story but once it picked up, I NEEDED to know what would happen! The way everything connected was so good and definitely gets you thinking.
