Significantly superior to her Divergent series. The world-building, character motivations, and pacing are all excellent.
Once again, the only thing preventing me from giving this otherwise unique & interesting story 5 stars is the unnecessary gay side couples.

I really wanted to like this book. I really really did. I did at least for maybe the first 100 pages. That was when the fluff drowned any liking I had in the plot. It became increasingly predictable and quite honestly boring. I give it a three stars because the writing style was good for at least the beginning. I really enjoyed the plot too for a short while. She definitely had something going but she killed it with the fluff and predictability. Sorry Veronica. You should stick with Divergent
It's not bad-bad, the writings okay. But there were to many new words to keep up with for me. I also found the middle 150 pages really slow, like:get on with it! Also, I don't enjoy this type of science fiction apparently..
So I feel like I have a love hate relationship with Veronica Roth. I've been avoiding reading this book, since the reviews were pretty bad, and I just didn't trust Roth after reading Allegiant. I really enjoyed the first 2 books of the Divergent trilogy, but Allegiant ruined the whole series. The plot line went way off course and Roth tended to be a little too kill happy with her characters. But in the end, I decided to give this book a chance, because I really did enjoy Divergent, even if it was kind of weird at times.
Reviews for this book are the not the best, one of the reasons for that is because people claim it's racist. I don't agree with this. The Shotet people are described being of MIXED race because they are scavengers. Cyra is described having dark skin, so people automatically assume that all of them have dark skin. If you read closely, you'll see that there are plenty of Shotet who have blonde hair, hence the word mixed. The book isn't racist, people just like to find problems where there aren't any.
So I feel like I'm one of like 4 people to actually like this book. I'm hesitant to give it 5 stars, because it does have it's flaws, but the pros to me out weigh the flaws. The sheer amount of time that Roth had to spend creating these characters and these worlds had be a crazy lot. I think the world building was near perfect, and having to come up with the all the names, traits, personalities of all of these different worlds had to be extremely difficult, so bravo there.
Roth also created 2 of probably my favorite characters of all time. Akos and Cyra were fascinating, and so deep, and just to add to their greatness, they also developed beautifully. They're love was so sweet and organic. They built each other up, made each other better, and both save one another, which is how a relationship should be.
The themes in the book were subtle, but powerful at the same time. We are more than what we seem. Watching the characters struggle and fight to break expectations and just be better was perfect and not forced in any way.
The book is slow at times and it is hard to remember names of all the characters since they're kind of weird and sometime sound the same. However, if you're into true Science fantasy, with a young adult twist, you'll love this.
Ok Roth, I'm trusting you here, this book was great. PLEASE don't ruin the rest of them!

Terrible. Too much info dumping to start.
I listened to it via audiobook and I just could not connect to ANYTHING in this book.
I realize there is a lot of controversy surrounding the book so I had to read it for myself. But I will not bring this into my classroom or recommend this to anyone.

the book, Carve the Mark was a great book aside from the very confusing names. this book combines the book, Renegades and the shatter me book series. If you like one of these books I would definitely recommend it. this book is filled with enemies to lovers and has a great storyline.
(No Spoilers) This was so hard to get through that if I hadn't been reading this for a book club I would have put it down before I got halfway. The alien races and their quirks/histories/culture are not well formed and the WORDS....I can't pronounce half of the names and words she made up which made it really hard to follow who was who in this large cast of characters. My book club mates were equally confused on abrupt scene changes. I loved Veronica's previous popular series so I had high hopes for this. I know she can do better work but I'm not so sure she put as much thought into this book. I will not invest in the sequel unfortunately.

be sure to check tws. I thought it was great. I love books set on different planets, it’s always interesting to see different worlds. I got into it really fast and I read it really quick. I was eager to read the next one and I would recommend.
