I've heard about this book over the years, and finally ordered a copy. It is AMAZING. The first book to explore the world of masochism (named for the author), it is an interesting romantic and psychological study into pain and passion. Not really connected to real-life BDSM community, but hey, the man basically invented the concept, so give him a break. It's beautifully written, and creates this strange situation where you are both drawn to and disgusted by the main characters. Good book.

It was an interesting read, considering its historical value. I didn' t expect it to be so close to how sm culture is now. Although, we nowadays are tame in comparison - these people weren't playing. I was prepared for something subtle, but that's a complete opposite of that. The contracts of the author and his wife at the end took me out.

I was surprisingly captivated by this bizarre read. I appreciated the discussion of sexuality and gender, especially for something published in 1870, although the ending sentiments bothered me a bit.
