Starting this book all I knew about it was that the word Masochist was derived from the author's name. I expected it to be dated, but I was surprised that it was pure misogynistic kink shaming.
Well that was... weird. This is where the term "masochism" comes from, apparently. Sacher-Masoch made some interesting observations about relationships, but this novella doesn't come anywhere near explaining to me why someone would let themselves be put into the slave position. I just... yeah I just don't get it.
A story of poor kink negotiation, nonexistent aftercare, and cuckoldry. Period appropriate misogyny and classical references abound. Somehow more interesting than I expected it to be.
Severin: I want you to be cruel to me, hurt me, whip me
Wanda: Is cruel to him, hurts him, whips him
Severin: :(

You ever go over to a friend's house and you're like huh what an interesting painting and then he hands you a fucking manuscript like here read my tale? This had some pretty turns of phrase and evocative imagery, and some sexy parts, OK, but overall I was mostly bored.
(The sexism was expected -- but there's a part at the end that seems surprisingly forward thinking, if I understood correctly, re how relationships can't be truly equal until women are treated differently.)

A cautionary tale of Severin and the woman of his dreams Wanda. Severin convinces Wanda to fulfill his fantasies of a woman that treats him like a slave to prove his love.
Interesting story from a historical aspect as this is the start of S&M, however as a literary story, it drags.

Speeches could get a bit didactic and melodramatic at times.
