Read via audiobook (Wavesound from W. F. Howes Ltd)

The pace picked up for this installment and resulted in an excellent mystery! I appreciated that most of the characters had distinct and strong personality in this novel (maybe the protagonist is still lacking). The interconnectedness of each character possibly being involved with the womans dissappearance meant the reader could sympathise with the likable characters, but they remained untrustworthy which added extra dimension to the reading.

The setting Harper has created within the bush was also superb - excellent descriptions of the dark and damp, the sounds of critters, the confusing walking tracks, being stuck hiking with painful personalities.

Aaron Falk seems to throw himself into danger to be heroic
in the second to last chapter of each of his books (so far)
which is getting a bit tired. If this fit better with his general disposition it might be feasable, but it feels like sacrifice to make the character likeable.

Overall, a fun murder mystery with more drama and satisfaction than The Dry!

This was a great mystery/thriller! Federal Detective Aaron Falk is a great character. Despite working in the financial crime unit, he has found himself on a much bigger case again. When ten coworkers set out for a 3-day, team-building camping adventure in the Australian bushland, something goes terribly wrong. Of the five women on the trip, only four return and no one knows what’s happened to Alice Russell. Agent Falk and his partner must work with the state police to support search-and-rescue and try to find Alice before it’s too late. Jane Harper writes a suspenseful, page-turning novel without anything being too graphic or scary. It’s my favorite kind of thriller, and I can’t wait to read the third installment of the Aaron Falk books.

It's the second book in the Aaron Falk detective series, the first *The Dry* I read here for a BR last year and I really love this character and the way that Jane Harper writes.
Typically her way of writing mysteries are much more 'story' based than the reader trying to work it out themselves if that makes sense? You're going along with Falk's pace of working things out rather than it being a shared mystery but with the nature of how her stories go (usually connected to Falk) that really works here, imo.
If you like human drama heavy mysteries set in the more rural and wild parts of Australia, I can't recommend Jane Harper enough - her newest book, Exiles came out this year and I'll be reading that soon too

Couldn’t put this down and read it in one night. It wasn’t mind blowing but I was kept guessing until the end. Didn’t love as much as ‘The Dry’, but another good read by Jane Harper!
