I rated it a 3.5 because I'm not a fan of horror, but I liked Mexican Gothic a lot more than I've liked books in a similar vein. This is also the second book of Moreno-Garcia's where the ending bumped up the rating from what it would have been.

A little slow to get going and I guessed the major reveals at 48% according to my reading journal.
It did become a real thrill by the end though. I read most of the second half in a day.
There were a few times I felt like we were forgetting useful information we learned or not using avenues to learn more.
Ultimately, a great read. I'll be reading more from this author for sure.

Moreno-Garcia uses what is often thought of as a British literary genre (gothic fiction) to weave a horror story where the ultimate villain and contagion is British colonialism. She employs and subverts the gothic genre tropes in a wholly refreshing way. While this book is conceptually brilliant..it is a little shaky on execution. The first half of the book really did seem to drag-on, almost painfully so - lots of repetitive conversations, surface level character development, etc. There were no sitting-on-the-edge-of-my-seat moments - just not very suspenseful for a gothic horror of any type, which was a disappointment. Like I said, the use of the gothic genre (or post-colonial gothic genre) in this book to discuss topics like race, gender and nationality was really well thought out - but it didn’t go far enough to get me emotionally invested.

Such a cool story! The sense of unease while reading was fantastic. The only thing preventing it from being 5 stars was that the "antagonist" seemed a little poorly explained. What it could do seemed to be a bit inexplicable

A little too slow and boring for me. I wished the characters had a bit more going on in terms on their interactions.
