I really wanted to like this since SJM is one of my favorite authors but the plot was so slowwwww.

This book is throne of glass under a new name. We’ve seen exactly this from Maas before; smart, confident and gorgeous female protagonist ends up somehow outwitting everyone and constantly being the most charming and lovely person in the room. There is nothing new here, only giving it the extra star because it was a good reprieve from an even more boring book that I was reading, and was somehow compelled to finish it very quickly.

Suprisingly, I really enjoyed this books. I just expected it to be some predictable, basic storyline but there were quite a few plot twists which I didn't expect. I liked many of the characters and the ending was good. There was a lot of depth into the writing and the narrative as well.

I have always been a Marvel girl but my work wife recommended it. I was not disappointed. It was nice seeing Selina as a fully realized character and not just a generic femme fatale. I enjoyed her shenanigans with Harley and Ivy so much. It was a bit so to start but once she came back to Gotham it really got going and didn't stop.

Out of the three already released DC novels, I loved this one the most. Perhaps it's my fond proclivities for cats, or SJM, but I very much enjoyed the writing, the quick paced, yet well thought out storyline, and the characters.

4/5 stars

I’ve never read any of the Batman comics, but I did grow up watching the TV show, and have seen plenty of the movies, so I am somewhat familiar with the franchise. I have, however, never been familiar with Catwoman/Selina Kyle’s backstory. In this particular retelling we first meet Selina as a teenager; she is struggling to provide for both herself and her younger sister, Maggie, who is suffering from cystic fibrosis. Selina is part of a gang called The Leopards, and she fights and steals to earn money. She is eventually recruited by The League of Assassins, is gone for two years, and then returns to Gotham City on a mission. Said mission is slowly revealed as the story progresses.

Speaking first of Selina, usually she is portrayed as extremely independent and this is very much not the case in this retelling: in Catwoman: Soulstealer Selina’s main motivations for any of her actions are her sister, and she does not work alone, enlisting in the help of both Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Selina still maintains her air of mystery, and independence aside, I do still feel she is faithful to her character, sexy, brave, persevering, with an unwillingness to kill. Instead of Batman we have Batwing/Luke Fox. This was my first introduction to Luke Fox. He is a black marine veteran suffering from PTSD, and I feel SJM handled these elements of the story well. Luke is a likeable character with a traditional superhero type personality. Harley Quinn felt true to her character, and we received a backstory from Poison Ivy that I was unfamiliar with. They were both great additions to the story.

I have always loved Gotham City as a settling. I feel that SJM successfully captured the darkness, terror, and the high society parts of Gotham City. I also feel SJM was successful with her fight scenes, and for the most part stakes felt high throughout the entire novel. I admit I was surprised by how invested I became in the story. I found the weakest aspect of Catwoman: Soulstealer to be its ending. Catwoman: Soulstealer has one of SJM’s signature endings (big spoiler)
Spoilerdeath of a main character followed by said character being resurrected, I don't really understand why she keeps doing this *sigh*
things wrapped up a bit too nicely, and while I initially liked the romance, it felt cheesy at the end.
