In many ways this book ticks boxes for me: science fiction, surrealist, absurdist. It's a fun read and not what I was expecting when I picked it up. It it, however, very of its time. Namely, it centres solely on white (male) characters. Women are only an annoyance or fulfil sexual roles, and the only POC are mentioned as "negroes". They are only briefly mentioned and do nothing to add to the plot. In the context of when it was written and who the author was it's difficult to expect greatness in diversity and depth of character, although the story itself and the writing is fun and engaging.
