This book feels like a weird fever dream. If that's what you're looking for, great.

Loved this book. It’s humorous for sure. A little fast paced in certain places but who doesn’t want to be a fire unicorn who’s just badass all around?

I had a really hard time with this one, honestly.

The comedy fell a little flat for me. And while I thought the FMC was awesome, her self-esteem was unbelievably bad. Like, I get her parents were shit, but I don't see how it gets this far from that. Not when she's been away from them for so long.

I don't get what happened in the coffee shop in the beginning. Why did no one show up for work? Even knowing, in the end, why Mary left ... why did she stay gone? And no one else come in for their shift? I feel like there was a weird loose end there.

I don't like how anyone in the book treated the FMC. And that includes the MMC. I don't understand how all these people who seem to care about her in some weird withdrawn way ... didn't visit her in the hospital (even the nurses felt weird that she had no visitors, we're told), or do anything to help her situation... so much so that when she is finally released the first time, she has no home because they napalmed it (no one told her, either), no purse, no ID, no money, no credit cards, no clothes... literally fucking nothing. She's discharged from the hospital, still sick, and dropped in that situation with no one even warning her, much less helping her. She was in the hospital for a month! The Chief of Fucking Police - who we're supposed to believe has been obsessively in love with her for literally years - can't get the ball rolling on getting her ID and replacement credit cards? Have a plan for where she will live? After all, he was in charge of the site and gave the order to burn her place down, for fuck's sake.

So there was this weird overlay of ... all these people are fuckheads, and I don't like the lead male, and I don't believe any of them care about her, and I don't want this awesome lead female to stay in this life at all. Like, time to leave town.

And that's without even getting into the way the CDC and police acted like they own her. Seriously, she does not work for them and they order her to sites when she's tired and hurting after the last one, and won't take no for an answer. The head of the CDC even arranges for her to be prostituted to a man who tried to rape her. I don't give a fuck WHO that guy is, he tried to rape her, tried to rape a bunch of people that he admitted - on body camera - that he petrified when they declined him. How is this motherfucker not in JAIL, much less demanding he be allowed to buy her. She doesn't even work for the fucking CDC, she's a freelancer! But this book insists that she doesn't fucking get to say no.

What. The. Fuck?

So honestly, even though I wanted to like it, this book actually pissed me off a lot. I don't think I'm going to read onward in the series.

This book was absolutely hilarious. So much happening, weird bloodlines and different powers. Just when you think the book has made you laugh incredulously, a new wrench happens and we discover a new odd relative, power, or crap hits the fan. Had me howling with laughter.

This book is strange.

I don't know if giving it 3 stars or 4.
I mean, the book is funny and so are the interaction BUT, while the world is quite interesting, the world building isn't the best. It actually consist mainly on info dumping which also end up to be confusing. The characters are kinda cartoonish and there isn't that much development. They are still enjoyable but they aren't realistic. You end up liking them tough. As for the plot... You never know what to expect next but that's mainly because you are confused. You never understand how much what's happening is actually connected to the mistery or it's just a random (altough funny) event. And even after finishing the book you still aren't sure if the answer... It's like having a book full of flaws (noticeable ones) and yet you still end up liking it. It's not even as if those flaws are subtle, because they aren't. They are like a Nealon sign that you see for the whole time. (and I'm not even the kind of reader that analize a book!) And yet, despite all this, I still enjoyed the book! It's unsettling

So when I first saw this book cover, I automatically asked if that was a black unicorn next to the guy. Then I was thinking - holy shit, if it is .. I need to dive into this. So, spoiler alert - I dove into Playing with Fire.

Now I'm not going to lie. This book was completely bizarre. So bizarre that I'm not even sure how I exactly enjoyed anything about it. Yet, I did enjoy this. Maybe it's all the snark I got or maybe it's just because this flew by for me. Either way, I enjoyed it and that's that.

In it, you will meet Bailey and Sam. These two were a wild adventure with a dash of perfection. It didn't seem to matter what the stakes were for Bailey. She was determined to do things anyways. As for Sam, he was just Mr. Perfect basically. Perfect for bantering and such.

Besides that, this does dive into the romance department which I devoured. Even if some things were a smidge predictable. These two had chemistry and some sort of connection that just made me enjoy watching them be them. Which is so weird to say but I did.

In the end, I'm not sure what the next book will bring me but I hope it's equally entertaining but with more world building please!
