Th Queen of Sugar Hill does an amazing job of bringing Hattie McDaniels to life! Before reading this, I of course knew who Hattie McDaniel was, but all I really knew about her was that she was the first black woman to win an academy award.
Told in the style of an autobiography, the Queen of Sugar Hill displays the depths and nuances of Hattie McDaniel as an actress, activist, and woman. Reshonia Tate and the narrator do an excellent job of transporting you back to this world and filling in Hattieās story and life with believable and realistic dialogue and relationships. The book is well researched and excellently written, I had to remind myself that this is not an actual autobiography!
